What is a contraconch piercing?

Piercing Updated September 10, 2024

Conch vs Contraconch

When considering ear piercings, you’ve likely heard of the popular conch piercing. But have you explored the contraconch piercing?

The contraconch piercing is situated in the conchal area of your ear, positioned just above the earlobe and below the helix. This unique placement offers a distinctive and eye-catching look, setting it apart from other ear piercings.

If you’re looking for inspiration, check out our cute Conch piercing jewellery.

To enhance your style, consider adding a pop of colour to your ear with a contraconch piercing. They are visually striking; can elevate your overall appearance and help you stand out from the crowd.

Is a contraconch piercing painful?

Pain levels for piercings are different for everyone! Cartilage piercings tend to hurt more than soft tissue piercings, so we believe the pain level for a contraconch piercing is about a 6/10, similar to a helix or flat piercing. However, the piercing process is over in seconds! And we have some amazing aftercare products to help your piercing heal as quick as possible.

Remember to breathe during your appointment and drink plenty of water so you’re feeling as relaxed as possible. If you have any concerns, you can always chat to one of our Beauty Therapists! You can also read about preparing for a piercing via our blog here.

How long does it take for a contraconch piercing to heal?

Healing times are also different for everyone, as it will depend on the person’s anatomy and your aftercare. For complete healing of a contraconch piercing we recommend waiting 12-24 months before leaving any jewellery out of the piercing.

Signs your contraconch piercing may have healed:

  • It has been 12-24 months since you received your piercing*.
  • There is no more discharge or redness.
  • The piercing is not tender to touch.
  • The jewellery is loose and moves somewhat freely.

*Please note: these times are general, and healing varies for the individual. If you are unsure, visit your Piercing Experts to consult and advise.

Is It difficult to sleep with a contraconch piercing?

During the healing process, it’s often recommended to sleep on your back to avoid irritation and discomfort. However, if you prefer sleeping on your side, our Ear Piercing Pillow is an excellent solution designed specifically for side-sleepers. It provides the support and cushioning needed to keep your piercing safe and comfortable while you rest.
